Understanding Ants: Nature and Behavior
Ants are a type of insect; they are closely related to bees and wasps. Like bees and wasps, ants have a narrow waist, segmented body, and some have stingers extending from the back of their abdomen. Living together in large numbers, the only way a colony can succeed is by the members working together. Each day the many workers leave the nest and forage for food.
Ants are omnivores and feed on various things, including seeds, other small insects, honeydew, sweet liquids, and proteins. Ants are specially adapted to gather food for the colony; in addition to carrying ten times their weight, they have two stomachs; one for digesting food and one to store food to bring back to the colony. Ants produce chemicals called pheromones that they use to communicate with each other; they also use their antennae and legs to sense vibrations and send messages. Ants communicate to alert the members of their colony of food sources and danger.
Pavement ants, Pharaoh ants, and odorous house ants live in the Denver and Omaha area and frequent our yards, homes, and businesses. Outside ants are helpful; they act as a food source for many animals, and their nests and tunnels help to aerate the soil and help rid the forest floor of decaying debris. But, inside our structures, ants are known as dangerous and sometimes destructive pests.

Where will I find ants?
Ants live throughout much of the world, nesting outside in the soil, leaf litter, or decaying plants or trees. Most of the 12,000 species of ants worldwide live far away from people, but some have discovered the luxury of living in our yards and homes.
More often than not, pavement ants choose to nest in the soil next to the foundation of homes, sidewalks, next to the pavement, or under cement slabs. Inside our homes, they like to nest in masonry walls, and behind walls or under floors near water pipes.
Pharaoh ants nest in damp, shaded areas like under leaves, fallen trees, and mulch. However, Pharaoh ants prefer to nest indoors, in warm, humid areas like behind baseboards, behind wall voids, and under floors. These ants are a significant problem in hospitals and health care facilities. Due to their high moisture needs, they will invade IV bags and patient wounds and eyes.
Odorous house ants also have high moisture needs and like to nest outside under leaf piles, landscaping ties, and mulch. When it becomes too hot or dry out, they migrate, often finding a way into a home or other structure. Wall voids near water pipes, air conditioners, and heating units, sinks, and tubs are some favorite hideouts.

Why do I have an ant problem?
Ants invade our homes in large numbers and are difficult to control and eliminate. Their multiple nests and ability to move into our homes through the smallest of spaces make them a frustrating pest to deal with. The biggest reason that ants become a problem for us is they have discovered that our properties offer them a consistent food source. Trash cans, pet food bowls, gardens, and flower beds all attract ants and their voracious appetites.
-
Are ants dangerous?
The bacteria and diseases that ants spread as they move over surfaces make ants unwanted pests in our homes. Ants are also unwanted in our yards because not only do they create unsightly nests in our lawns and gardens, but living in our outdoor spaces puts them close to our homes, allowing them to gain easy access whenever they want. Other problems that ants cause include contaminating food, causing structural damage, and attracting other pests to your property that want to feed on them.
